Origin Has 9.3 Million Users

EA announced that their online distribution service Origin has a total of 9.3 million registered users.

During its latest financial briefing, the company revealed that Origin now has "more than 9.3 million consumers," and has generated "more than $100 million in non-GAAP revenue since launch."

Origin is now supported by various third party companies. Last month, the publisher announced partnership with CD Projekt RED, 1C Company, Paradox Interactive, and more.

While Origin's rapid growth will certainly make EA's investors happy, the service is still trailing significantly behind Steam, which currently holds over 40 million accounts.

Battlefield 3 sells 11 million, new DLC announcement expected next week

EA had an earnings call earlier this week, which gave their executives a chance to shout about what a good year they’ve had. During the course of the call, chief financial officer Frank Gibeau mentions that Battlefield 3 has sold more than 11 million copies, boosting EA’s market share in the “Western FPS market” by 11 points to 24%. The rest of that share probably still belongs to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

The release of more add-on packs like Back to Karkand could boost those numbers a bit more. The transcript of the call from Seeking Alpha has a response to a question from an investor about DLC plans. VP of investor relations Peter C. Ausnit answers by saying that we can expect “announcements from us on Battlefield actually as early as next week.” It sounds like it’ll be part of an ongoing series of releases, Ausnit suggests there will be a “constant flow of downloadable content” for Battlefield 3 this year.

So, 2011's shooters kept the sequels coming and made powerhouse franchises even bigger. While 2012 doesn't completely change the formula, the arsenal of shooters represent bold steps towards telling better stories, elevating competitive arenas, and making big franchises even bigger. Here's what you can expect from shooters in 2012.

Do you play shooters for their story? Not everyone does. But of all the shooters lined up for release this year, the majority aim to focus on telling a good story -- almost before getting the gunplay right. The story in Spec Ops: The Line pulls inspiration from Joseph Conrad's classic Heart of Darkness and its film reimagining Apocalypse Now. Far Cry 3 takes the battle back to the jungle and focuses on at least one insane character, whose unpredictability makes for particularly terrifying encounters. Prey 2 steps away from its earlier iteration and takes a tale of bounty hunting into the reaches of space.
